Horizon Hunters Gathering is a shift in the right direction

Sony blessed all of our faces today with the announcement of Horizon Hunters Gathering. This is a three player co-op action game set in the universe of one of their flagship titles – Horizon. Set to be cross progression both PS5 and PC, Horizon Hunters Gathering boasts a different graphical style and overall experience than the main titles. This definitely looks to be a live service game we can all get behind.

Live service games are scary. Usually they drop with little to no information very quickly and end up either overwhelming players or failing to have a long-term strategy. Guerilla Games wants to make sure we all know that they are still a way off from the release of HHG and have plans for testing, roadmaps, etc. I think this is great. Building the expectation early rather than shadow dropping the game in a world filled with review bombs for anything that even LOOKS new is a good move.

Players will soon be able to test out some modes within the game, too, so we can get a feel for the game. A horde-like mode cultivating into a big boss battle. And also a rogue-like mode with rooms that change and challenges in each. Overall, it seems like Guerilla Games wants to give us a chance to help shape the game before the final release. After all, this is a big IP from Sony, I can only imagine the pressure for this to succeed.

While some may be thrown off by the art style not being the same as the mainline games, I feel this looks great (even if it feels familiar). What we were shown, it looks like it plays great as well. Guerilla Games also states that the story IS set in the Horizon world and plans to be canon to the games. Of course, only time will tell as things develop and progress.

I really love the idea of using IPs for cool spin-offs and side journeys like this. I wish the best for Guerilla Games and Sony and honestly cannot wait to get my hands on the beta test. Do you have any IPs you’d want to see take a side quest like this? Let us know!
